Dear New IUJ Students,

As you prepare to embark on your exciting journey to Japan, it’s important not to overlook one essential aspect—your health.
While moving to a new country is full of adventure, it can also bring challenges, especially when it comes to navigating a different healthcare system and language. Taking a few simple steps now can make a big difference later.
Here are a few key health tips to take care of before leaving your home country:

1. Visit Your Doctor

Schedule a general health check-up before you leave. Discuss any ongoing medical conditions and ask your doctor for advice on managing them while abroad. Be sure to bring enough medication to last your first few months in Japan, along with written prescriptions.
Common items to consider:
• Medication for headaches or migraines
• Digestive or stomach relief
• Allergy or seasonal medications
• Any personal or chronic condition treatments

2. See Your Dentist
Dental care in Japan can be costly and may involve long wait times. It’s best to handle any dental needs before you depart.
Recommended:
• A complete dental check-up
• Professional cleaning
• Treatment for any existing issues (e.g., cavities, tooth pain)

3. Pack a Basic Health Kit

Some over-the-counter (OTC) medicines that are easy to find in your country may require a prescription in Japan—or might not be available at all. Prices may also be higher. Bringing a small health kit can be very helpful.

Suggested items:
•  Pain relievers (e.g., ibuprofen, paracetamol)
•  Cold and flu medication
•  Digestive aids (e.g., antacids, anti-diarrheal medicine)
•  Emergency contraception (e.g., Morning-after pill). #If you think you might need it.
•  Antiseptic cream, itch relief, and basic first-aid supplies

Please note: There are regulations regarding bringing medication into Japan. Be sure to review the official guidelines from the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare:

Your time at IUJ will be full of new experiences. Staying healthy will help you enjoy them more. A little preparation now can save you time, money, and stress later.

Wishing you safe travels and a smooth transition!
