Application Process

Below is a simple check list of things you need to successfully apply. We hope it helps!  Please also review the resources on our Admissions page, including an FAQ section, Admissions One Point Advice, and scholarship info.

Application Check List

  1. Submit the application materials
    Remember to complete the application form online or in paper and mail all other necessary documents by the deadline. Those items are:

    Research Plan (IRP/IDP/IPSP applicants only)
    IRP/IDP/IPSP/MBA: One Essay
    E-Biz: Two Essays
    Two Recommendations in sealed and signed envelopes
    College Certificates with the College Certificate Request Form in sealed and signed envelopes
    GMAT Score Report sent directly from the Pearson VUE (MBA applicants only)
    TOEFL/IELTS Score Report sent directly from the ETS/the British Council (or an IELTS test center)

    Domestic applicants: 30,000yen
    International applicants: 5,000yen
    Domestic applicants: Two Photos
    International applicants: One Photo

  2. Announcement of Result
    Admission results are posted online at www.iuj.ac.jp/admis/result/. You are required to type your application ID and date of birth, and then you will receive an email saying whether or not you have successfully passed the screening process. The result will also be mailed to you along with the necessary documents to be filled in and returned to IUJ. A notice of scholarship allocation results will be enclosed as well if you applied for a scholarship.
  3. Admission procedures
    Follow the guidelines of admission procedures which are mailed to you. You will need to pay the admission fee and return the materials below by the designated deadline:

    • A completed medical examination form
    • 6 photos
    • A certificate of graduation from an undergraduate program (BA, BS, BEng, etc.) and transcript ONLY IF you have not yet graduate at the time of application.
    • An application form for certificate of eligibility (student visa application)
    • An application form for Intensive Japanese Language Program if desired.
    • An application form for Intensive English Program if desired.

  4. A Letter of Admission
    If you complete the admission procedures above, a Letter of Admission will be issued and mailed to you along with an application form for opening a local bank account. You are required to fill in the form and mail it back to us. The information on computer environment at IUJ and pre-arrival/arrival guide will be sent as well. The pre-arrival/arrival guide contains a lot of valuable information. Please read it very carefully.
  5. Visa
    In the middle of August, you will receive a certificate of eligibility if you send back the application form for that certificate by the due date. You are to apply for a student visa at the nearest Japanese embassy/consulate in your place in person or by mail with the certificate.
  6. Flight reservation/arrival dates (for those not participating in a summer program)
    In general, the previous 3 days before the start of the Intensive Japanese Language Program are the recommended arrival dates.
  7. Dorm room information
    You will be informed your dorm room number and phone number some time in the middle of August.
  8. Shipping
    Follow the pre-arrival/arrival guide. Remember to write your name, dorm room number and phone number on the invoice of your luggage.
  9. Departure for Japan
    Say "See you" to your family and friends and get on board a plane. From the airport to IUJ, follow the information in the pre-arrival/arrival guide.
