JICA President Shinichi Kitaoka delivers first guest lecture for IUJ’s Japan-Global Development Program

On October 4th, Shinichi Kitaoka presented a special lecture on “Japan’s modernization and Fukuzawa Yukichi” at the MLIC Hall. Kitaoka is the current president of JICA, and a former professor and president of IUJ. The lecture was part of the Japan-Global Development Program operated jointly by IUJ and JICA, but was open to any interested students.

The lecture gave an overview of Japan’s modernization after the Meiji Restoration, from the perspective of political and diplomatic history. Kitaoka described the transition from the feudal systems of the Edo period (1603-1868) to the modern political institutions and industrial state of the Meiji era. He highlighted the influence of renowned Japanese scholar and statesman Fukuzawa Yukichi during this era of modernization. Kitaoka offered insight into both the positive and negative aspects of industrialization that served as the foundation of the future Japanese empire. The lecture led to a lively question and answer session.

President Kitaoka’s meaningful presentation kicked off the Japan-Global Development Program’s guest lecture series while strengthening the bonds between JICA and IUJ.

IUJ is holding an online information session on Saturday, November 16th

Looking to further your education? The International University of Japan is holding an online information session on Saturday, November 16th from 10am until 11am, to give prospective students insight into what the school has to offer.

IUJ was established in 1982 as the first English-language graduate school in Japan. Currently, 320 students from 55 countries undertake studies at the university, with alumni hailing from a total of 136 countries. It truly lives up to being the university Where the World Gathers.

IUJ is a school that is continually growing – not just by the number of countries that students hail from, but in its international standing. The Graduate School of International Management proudly obtained accreditation from AACSB in 2018, and a new master’s program the Japanese-Global Development Program was established to provide students the opportunity to learn universal development and growth logic in the fields of politics, economy and management, using Japan’s experiences in economic development and corporate growth as basic case materials.

This information session is applicable to those interested in applying to IUJ for the 2020 academic year or in the near future. The event will give participants the opportunity to find out more about what the university has to offer, as well as the chance to meet current students and alumni for first hand accounts of their experiences with the school.

IUJ held its 2019 New Student Welcome Day

IUJ had the pleasure of officially introducing 160 new students from 39 countries to the campus at the annual Welcome Day event on Friday September 27. Students were introduced one by one according to where they were from.

President Itami welcomed the students to the IUJ family and talked about what to expect from studying here. It’s going to be a unique opportunity to experience not only Japanese culture but also to have multicultural interactions among peers.

Sponsors and special guests from business leaders to heads of local community groups were also introduced to students. We would like to thank all of them for joining us on Welcome Day.  IUJ is grateful for their ongoing support.

Students also had a chance to hear from the Dean of International Relations, Maung Aung Myoe, the Dean of International Management, Wenkai Li and the Director of Center for Language Education and Research (CLEAR), Akihiro Takeuchi. They introduced the other faculty members that our students will be studying under, and their various areas of expertise.

After the formal speeches and introductions, some food and drinks were served. Students had some time to mingle with guests, professors and fellow students.  A lot of photos were taken and shared. Everyone looked like they were having fun meeting new people.

We wish our new students all the best for their time here at IUJ. As President Itami said “Work hard, play hard”, we hope that you make the most of your time here. We are here to support you when you need it. We have no doubt that this year’s new students will apply what they learn here at IUJ wherever they go next.
