Mission on Nurturing Human Resources

Master's Program

GSIR is dedicated to developing professionals by educating students towards acquiring a long-term vision of the rapidly changing world, appreciating diverse perspectives in global and local contexts, and enhancing their analytical skills and problem-solving capabilities in a wide range of contemporary international affairs. GSIR also encourages academic research conducive to the development of its faculty’s teaching and supervision as well as student’s capability in the fields of international relations, international development and international peace studies, utilizing the experiences of Japan and the Asia-Pacific region. All programs are conducted in English.

PhD Program

The Doctoral Course of GSIR is dedicated to developing human resources by educating students toward acquiring a long-term vision of the rapidly changing world, appreciating diverse perspectives in global contexts, and enhancing their high-level research ability required for conducting research in a wide range of contemporary international affairs as an independent researcher or required for other highly specialized professionals with a well-rounded scholarship that builds the foundation for the research ability. All courses are conducted in English.

Three Policies

The fundamental objective of the Admissions Committee at IUJ is to admit to our graduate programs as many of the most competent students as possible, limited by the number of places available in each school (see below). In order to select the most competent students, the committee will review all the applicants individually based on several criteria listed below, through interviews (when applicable) and/or documentary screening. IUJ does not use a predetermined formula for rating the content of undergraduate education, nor does it use quotas based on nationality, age, or gender.

Desired Student Profile

The Graduate School of International Relations (GSIR) seeks individuals who have a long-term vision to see the trends of the times and a global perspective, so that they can recognize and respect diverse values, demonstrate advanced analytical and problem-solving skills in dealing with the wide-ranging issues facing the international community, and aim to become leaders who can put these skills into practice in the international arena.

Qualities and Abilities We Seek in Our Students

The master’s programs in the GSIR seek students with the following skills and abilities:

  1. Well-defined motivation to pursue graduate studies;
  2. Scholastic achievements at the undergraduate level meeting the standards required for coursework and research activities at the GSIR;
  3. Aptitude and potential to become leaders who can significantly contribute to and/or manage increasingly global organizations;
  4. Maturity to meet the demands of a rigorous academic experience;
  5. Fair sense of values that will enable them to join our multinational and multicultural IUJ community, interest in understanding different cultures, drive to actively communicate with others, and a desire to create a world-wide network of contacts;and
  6. Proficiency in written and spoken English required for coursework and research activities at the GSIR.
