Q. How do I apply to IUJ?
A. Applications to IUJ are submitted online through the online application system. Detailed instructions are provided in the Application Guidelines to assist you with each step of the application process.
Q. What are the admission requirements?
A. Applicants are generally required to hold a bachelor's degree (or equivalent) and have completed at least 16 years of formal education. Applicants with fewer than 16 years of education should refer to the Admissions Guidelines or contact the Admissions Office for further information.
Since all courses at IUJ are taught in English, applicants must also demonstrate sufficient English proficiency to undertake graduate-level coursework.

Q. I have not graduated yet. What documents should I submit?
A. Applicants who are in the process of completing their undergraduate program should submit the following documents by the application deadline:
- An official transcript showing the courses/subjects completed up to the time of application
- An official letter from your current institution certifying the expected date of graduation and the official title of the degree to be awarded upon completion of the program
Q. Who should I list as my referee for the application?
A. Your referee should be your academic advisor at your university or your direct supervisor at your workplace.
Q. May I apply without work experience?
A. Yes, you can apply without work experience. Many students are admitted to IUJ without prior work experience. However, the Intensive MBA (one-year program) requires at least three years of full-time work experience, and the International Public Policy (one-year program) requires at least five years of full-time work experience.
Q. Can I apply to both Graduate School of International Relations (GSIR) and Graduate School of International Management (GSIM) at the same time?
A. Yes, you can. However, the admissions processes are separate. You must submit two separate applications and follow all instructions provided by each school. In addition, an application fee is required for each program.
Q. Can I apply for more than one program offered in the same school (GSIR/GSIM) in the same selection year?
A. Yes, you can. You must prepare and submit separate applications for each program you wish to be considered for. However, we recommend that you choose the program that best fits your career goals, and then use the cross-registration system to customize your IUJ experience by taking courses offered in other IUJ programs.
Q. What is the difference between a Domestic Applicant and an International Applicant?
Domestic Applicants are residents of Japan, regardless of nationality. This includes Japanese nationals living in Japan, as well as non-Japanese nationals who hold a valid residence status in Japan and are expected to maintain it through the application and admissions period.
International Applicants are residents of countries other than Japan, regardless of nationality. This includes Japanese nationals residing outside Japan, as well as non-Japanese applicants who do not hold a residence status in Japan during the application and admissions process.
Please note that application procedures, requirements, and fees may differ between Domestic and International Applicants.
Q. Will my application fee be refunded if I withdraw my application or fail to complete the submission by the deadline?
A. No. The application fee is non-refundable under any circumstances. Once submitted, all application materials and supporting documents become the property of the Admissions Committee and will not be returned.
Q. What are the minimum TOEFL, IELTS, or TOEIC scores required?
A. There is no minimum score requirement; however, the following scores are recommended:
- TOEFL iBT: 80
- IELTS Academic: 6.5
- TOEIC: 800
