Q. What is IUJ?
IUJ (International University of Japan) is a graduate university in Japan where all programs are taught in English. It has about 400 students from around 60 countries and regions, living and studying together on a residential campus.
IUJ offers master’s programs and a doctoral program in international relations, as well as master’s programs in international management. It is known for its international environment, small class sizes, and close interaction between students and faculty.
Q. What degrees does IUJ offer?
A. IUJ offers the following Degree programs, with all course work in English.

IUJ allows cross-registration across its master’s degree programs, enabling students to design a more customized curriculum aligned with their career goals. For example, MBA students may take courses offered in the Graduate School of International Relations, and International Development Program students may take finance courses from the MBA program.
Q. What language are IUJ courses taught in?
All courses, papers, theses, and presentations at IUJ are delivered in English.
Q. Does IUJ offer undergraduate or doctoral programs?
IUJ does not offer undergraduate programs.
At the graduate level, IUJ offers master’s programs and a doctoral program under the Graduate School of International Relations (GSIR), and master’s programs under the Graduate School of International Management (GSIM). Since Fall 2015, IUJ has welcomed PhD candidates in GSIR, with research clusters in International Relations, Economics, and Public Management available for qualified applicants.
Q. Is IUJ a Japanese university? Is it accredited by the Japanese Ministry of Education?
Yes, IUJ (International University of Japan) is a fully accredited private university in Japan, recognized by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT).
Q. Where is the IUJ campus located?
A. IUJ is located in Minamiuonuma City, Niigata Prefecture, approximately 230 kilometers northwest of Tokyo and about 100 kilometers south of Niigata City.
The nearest train station is Urasa Station. It takes about 90 minutes from Tokyo to Urasa by the Joetsu Shinkansen (bullet train). The Joetsu Shinkansen and the Kan’etsu Expressway provide convenient access to Tokyo and Niigata City.
A free shuttle bus connects IUJ with the campus and Urasa Station. In addition, Saturday and Sunday bus service is available for students to shop in Muikamachi and Koide. (Bus Schedule)
Q. May I visit the IUJ Campus?
Yes. We would be happy to welcome you to the IUJ campus. Please contact the Office of Admissions and Career Support via Inquiry Form in advance to arrange your visit.
You are also encouraged to attend our Open Campus events, which are held several times throughout the year. Please refer to the Events section on the IUJ website for more information.
Q. Can I enroll in the Spring Term (starting in April)?
A. All degree-seeking students must enroll in the Fall Term to begin their studies at IUJ.
Before classes start in the first week of October, new students participate in orientation programs and workshops during September.
Exchange students may be able to start in the defferent term, depending on the agreement between IUJ and their home institution.
Q. What support is available for students with special needs?
IUJ welcomes applicants with special needs to contact us for information on our campus facilities and reasonable accommodations they may need to join our academic programs and participate in dorm life.
Currently IUJ has the following campus features to support some disabilities:
- Wheel chair accessible toilet in the main classroom building area
- Disabled parking area near the IUJ main entrance
- Elevators and ramps to make most of campus accessible by wheel chairs
- Elevators also available for dormitory rooms
- Twice a month health consultation services (free) on campus
- Daily mental health support services (free) on campus
- Teaching Assistance and academic mentoring services are available upon request or faculty support
- Reasonable accommodations can be made as illustrated in Points of Note Concerning IUJ Guidelines for Eliminating Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities.
