1. CoE Application Procedures

International students who need a Certificate of Eligibility (CoE) to study at IUJ must complete the required immigration procedures before coming to Japan. IUJ will apply for the CoE on behalf of eligible incoming students.

2. Financial Requirements for CoE Application

The Immigration Services Agency of Japan places particular importance on confirming that international students have sufficient financial resources to cover their tuition fees and living expenses throughout their stay in Japan.

As part of the CoE application process, you must provide evidence of sufficient financial resources that are readily available to cover these expenses. The required amount depends on your tuition reduction or scholarship status and other relevant circumstances.

Estimated Financial Requirements

To demonstrate your financial capacity for the CoE application, you are generally required to provide evidence, primarily through a bank balance certificate or bank statement, that you have sufficient funds to cover your tuition fees and living expenses in Japan.

The following table shows the estimated expenses for one year, based on your program duration and Nakayama Scholarship tuition reduction rate.

Living expenses are estimated at approximately ¥100,000 per month, or ¥1,200,000 per year.

Please ensure that you can demonstrate access to sufficient funds to cover the estimated expenses applicable to your situation. These figures are IUJ's estimates for financial planning purposes and do not guarantee the outcome of your CoE application.

Scholarship Recipients

Students who have been awarded a scholarship that covers both tuition fees and living expenses are not required to submit separate proof of personal funds for the expenses covered by the scholarship.

Important: If IUJ cannot adequately confirm your financial capacity, we may be unable to submit your CoE application. Please note that the issuance of a CoE is at the sole discretion of the Immigration Services Agency of Japan. Although IUJ reviews your financial situation before submitting your application, IUJ cannot guarantee the issuance of a CoE or influence the Immigration Services Agency's decision.

Failure to meet IUJ's recommended financial guideline does not automatically result in cancellation of your admission. However, you must provide sufficient evidence of financial capacity before IUJ can proceed with your CoE application.

Please also note that IUJ cannot guarantee additional scholarships or emergency financial assistance to compensate for insufficient funds. You are responsible for making adequate financial arrangements before coming to Japan.

3. Required Documents

Students who need a CoE will receive detailed instructions, the required forms, and submission deadlines directly from IUJ. Depending on your circumstances, documents may include:

l  CoE application form

l  Copy of your passport

l  Data of your photograph specified by Immigration Services Agency

l  Proof of financial resources, such as a bank statement

l  Scholarship certificate, if applicable

l  Additional documents from your financial supporter, if applicable

All documents must be submitted in accordance with the instructions provided by IUJ. Additional documents may be requested depending on your circumstances and the requirements of the Immigration Services Agency of Japan.

*Important: Pre-Entry Tuberculosis Screening*

Nationals of certain countries may be required to obtain a Tuberculosis Clearance Certificate under Japan's Pre-Entry Tuberculosis Screening (JPETS) program. If you are a national of the Philippines, Nepal, Vietnam, or Indonesia, please check the official JPETS information (https://jpets.mhlw.go.jp/index.html) to determine whether the screening requirements apply to you. If required, you must complete the screening and obtain the necessary certificate in accordance with the official instructions.

4. Application Process

1.    Submit the required documents to IUJ by email.
2.    IUJ reviews your documents and informs you of any corrections or additional information required.
3.    Once your documents are complete, IUJ submits your CoE application to the Immigration Services Agency of Japan.
4.    After the CoE is issued, IUJ will notify you and send it to you by email.
5.    Apply for a student visa at a Japanese embassy or consulate using your CoE.

CoE processing generally takes approximately 2–3 months, although the actual processing time may vary. Please submit your documents promptly and allow sufficient time for the subsequent visa application.

5. Important Notice

You must complete all required admission procedures to enroll at IUJ. Obtaining a visa alone does not guarantee enrollment. Please follow the instructions and announcements from the Admissions Office carefully.

For questions regarding CoE procedures, please contact the Office of Student Services (OSS) at oss@iuj.ac.jp.
