Title:“Language or content? Assessment in the IUJ context ”

Seminar Summary:
The drive towards English Medium Instruction (EMI) in global higher education institutions shows no sign of slowing down. These EMI programs require proper assessment in order to be academically rigorous. As a result, university educators often find themselves in a position where they have to assess students with limited English proficiency on the content of their EMI courses. While it has to be said that there is clear evidence of a strong link between students’ English proficiency levels and their academic achievements on EMI courses, this seminar will explore the question of whether it is possible to design assessments in such a way that they reflect students’ actual content knowledge, rather than being drawn into evaluating their language proficiency.
