FAQs for GSIR students

The following FAQ has been created to try to answer some of the questions that the current GSIR students commonly have.

Course Registration / Dream Campus on the portal site

1. How can I know when (which term) each course will be offered?

2. What is the schedule for each term course registration periods?

3. I would like to confirm if the specific course is offered in this academic year.

Please search by course title with the latest course offerings on the GSIR info-page. Click here.

4. I cannot log-in/access MyIUJ.

Please double check if you input the correct ID/PW. If you are accessing it with your own device, please try to access it with a PC in the PC rooms. If it doesn’t resolve the problem, you should ask MLIC office at mlic-com@iuj.ac.jp.

5. Is it okay to take a GSIM course?

Yes. GSIR students can take any courses offered by GSIM school unless there is an enrollment limit.

6. The course I want to take is already full. Is it possible to increase the capacity?

Some course instructors set the enrollment limit for their courses. Please ask the course instructor directly. If he/she allow you to enroll, OAA can add the course in your course registration.

7. I want to take just Advanced Seminar in this term.

As written in the curriculum handbook, “Students should take at least 2 credits per term excluding Advanced Seminar and language courses”.

8. I cannot find "Complete" button.

The “Complete” button can be seen for students who are on campus during the completion/change of registration period at the beginning of each term. If you are accessing the portal site with your own device, please try to access with the PCs in PC rooms.

9. Where can I get the course registration form?

The course registration form can be printed out only after clicking the “complete” button on the DC portal site during the completion/change of registration period. Please note that the “complete” button does not appear on your screen during the registration period before the term starts.

10. Why the "Order of Arrival" is displayed on my timetable on the portal site?

This means that you could successfully register for the course which has the enrollment limit.

11. Where can I check courses what I have taken on the DC portal site?

It can be found in the “Grade” tab on the portal site.

12 What is the special deadlines for course cancellation/Withdrawal?

The special deadline for the course CANCELLATION is set for some courses that start after the course registration deadline because students have no chance to attend those classes before the course registration deadline. The special deadline for the course WITHDRAWAL is set for some courses that are offered intensively or irregularly. OAA will make announcement regarding these special deadlines by email before the course registration deadline.

13. Where can I find the course withdrawal form?

It can be found in the GSIR info-page. Click here. Please submit the form to OAA by the designated deadline.

Course Requirements

1. Which course do I have to take for graduation?

Please check carefully the latest course requirements of your program (degree) on the GSIR info-page.

2. What’s the maximum number of credits I can take per term?

Maximum Credits per term is up to 12 including credits obtained from Advanced Seminars and language courses.

3. Are 6 credits obtained from Advanced Seminars (I,II and III) included in the total credits number for graduation?

Yes. 6 credits are counted toward graduation credits number requirements either Thesis option or Research Paper option.

4. According to the course requirements, 2-year program students are required to obtain at least 30 credits from the courses which are offered by the school which they belong. Are 6 credits from advanced seminars included in this?

Advanced seminars are courses offered by GSIR school so 6 credits obtained from them are included in 30 credits requirement.

5. I have taken the 2-credits JGDP course offered by GSIM school. Does it fulfill the requirement to take at least 2 credits from GSIM school?

Yes. This is counted as the requirement to take at least 2 credits obtained from the GSIM course.

6. I would like to check whether taking two GSIM courses with 1 credit point meets the GSIM 2 credits requirement.

Taking two 1-credit GSIM courses can satisfy the requirement to take at least 2 credits from GSIM school.

7. Can I get credits by submitting the Thesis/Research Report?

No credits are given for the submission of Thesis/Research Report.

8. I would like to know whether I have already earned enough credits to graduate.

Please double check your course requirements and courses you have taken so far referring to the course requirements and the grade tab on the portal site . If you want to make sure with OAA, please send an email to ofcgsir@iuj.ac.jp anytime or visit our office during business hours. Your student ID, program (degree) and paper option (Thesis or Research Report) are required.

Class/Timetable

1. Is there any online course offered at IUJ?

All IUJ courses are conducted F2F in principle. But some part-time lecturers may conduct their course online.

2. Where is the classrooms for my registered courses?

The classroom allocations can be found in the timetable posted on the GSIR info page or the notice board outside of OAA.

3. Are there classes on Japanese national holidays?

IUJ classes are conducted even on national holidays unless the course instructor or OAA inform class cancellation.

IOP focus certificate/Japan focus certificate /JICA DSP certificate

1. Is it enough to take 5 designated courses even if I get only 9 credits from them to be eligible for IOP focus certificate?

Yes. There is no required credit number for the IOP focus certificate. To be eligible for the IOP Focus certificate, students in IRP, IDP, PMPP, IPPP have to take at least five courses from the designated courses listed in the curriculum handbook.

2. Which course is JGDP course?

The courses whose course ID start with JDPXXXX in the course offerings for GSIR and GSIM respectively are JGDP courses.

3. I want to get the course lists for IOP focus certificate and Japan focus certificate.

Please check the courses listed in the curriculum handbook. Any updates shall be announced by email.

4. Can the course listed in both (IOP focus and JGDP) course list satisfy the both certificate requirement?

Yes. If you take the course listed in both course list, you can fulfill the both certificate requirements for IOP and Japan focus certificates.

5. Will I fulfill the requirements for the IOP/Japan focus certificates?

IUJ will confer the “Japan Focus” Certificate to those who obtained 8 credits from JGDP courses listed in the curriculum handbook. To be eligible for the “IOP Focus” certificate, students in IRP, IDP, PMPP, IPPP have to take at least five courses from the designated courses listed in the curriculum handbook. Please check whether courses you have taken/ will take are in the list.

6. If I take the JGDP course offered by GSIM school, can it satisfy the requirement to take at least 2 credits from GSIM and the requirement for Japanese Focus certificate?

Yes. The JGDP course offered by GSIM school can satisfy the both requirement.

7. I would like to know how to apply for IOP focus certificate/Japan focus certificate.

OAA will email graduating students about how to apply for the IOP focus certificate and Japan focus certificate in the middle of June or so.

8. I am JICA sponsored student. I would like to confirm whether taking the JGDP course can fulfill the requirement for JICA DSP certificate set by JICA.

All JICA sponsored students are encouraged to earn at least 4 credits from JGDP courses which means that you can fulfill this requirement by taking JGDP courses. As for JICA DSP certificate, please ask JICA directly.

9. How can I get the JICA DSP certificate?

You will not receive this certificate at IUJ. Please ask JICA directly.

Others

1. I want to know faculty’s contact information.

Please check the campus directory or the office hours information posted on the GSIR info page.

2. If I have done 4 credits from languages courses, which 2 credits will be counted toward my GPA? most higher grades?

All credits from language courses are counted in your GPA, but only two credits from them will be applied toward graduation.

3. I am worried whether I can pass my core required course. Can I retake the course next year if I fail?

Tutor support may be provided based on your performance of mid-term exam. Please try your best until the final grade is released. Basically, core required courses have to be completed in the first year.

4. Can I retake the failed course last year?

Yes. If the course grade was “F” or “W”, it is okay to take the same course once again.
