Tuition and Fees

Below are estimated budget requirements to attend as a single person (without family) per academic year. The currency unit used is Japanese yen. IUJ does have many scholarships to help offset the costs.

Notes:

  • The admission fee of 300,000 yen is not required in the second year.
  • This estimate is for one academic year and assumes that students remain at IUJ during the summer. Food, utility, and personal expenses vary depending on individual lifestyles. Travel expenses are not included.

Additional Budgetary needs for Families

Please review the IUJ Family Guide carefully. It includes a budget of a real IUJ student’s family with 2 adults and 1 small child who lived in the surrounding community. Additional expenses for school aged children (uniforms and supplies) will apply (see the guide).

Please note that many of these figures are estimates, and can vary depending on lifestyle, travel interests, etc. They are offered here as a rough estimate.

Scholarships 

IUJ offers a range of scholarships to support successful applicants in our degree programs. Scholarships are awarded competitively at the time of admission, based on the goals of our partner organizations, companies, and foundations. Applicants may receive scholarships provided by IUJ, through IUJ nominations, or via independent applications. Please note that most scholarships require recipients to hold a Japan Student Visa.

Scholarship Guideline

How to apply for a scholarship:
  1. Read the Admissions Guidelines and Scholarship Guidelines in Brochures & Admissions Materials

  2. Create an account in the Online Application System and start your application. When registering, select “Non-Sponsored” as your sponsorship status.

  3. In Phase 2 of the online application, complete the Scholarship Section to apply for scholarships.

IUJ Scholarship Guidelines for Japanese Applicants

Scholarships for Japanese applicants differ from those offered to Non-Japanese applicants. The application process is the same as that for international applicants described above.

Scholarships Available After Enrollment at IUJ

In addition to scholarships offered before enrollment, there are several scholarships that students may apply for after beginning their studies at IUJ, depending on their academic performance and financial need.
Scholarship Information will be posted on the Office of Student Services bulletin board. The OSS staff will assist with the applications.  Many of the scholarships are provided by outside sources, and only administered by the OSS.

Scholarships Available Through IUJ

1. JASSO Honors Scholarship (Monbukagakusho Honors Scholarship for Privately -Financed International Students)

- The application results are announced in early November, and stipends for October and November are paid at the end of November.
- Scholarship recipients must sign the JASSO-designated form at the OSS every month.

Eligibility: Applicants must meet all of the following conditions
1. Be a regular student with a Japan student visa
2. Receive no scholarship or only Nakayama 100, 80, 70, 50, or 30
3. Have a GPA of 2.30 or higher (calculated using JASSO’s formula)
4. Meet the required English or Japanese language proficiency
5. Agree to complete a JASSO career survey after graduation

Applicants are NOT eligible if they:
1. Receive more than ¥90,000 per month in financial support (excluding tuition support)
2. Have a financial supporter living in Japan with an annual income over ¥5 million
3. Receive a scholarship that does not allow multiple scholarships
4. Receive JASSO funding for study abroad
5. Are MEXT scholarship recipients or funded by a foreign government

Conditions:

The candidate must:
1. Have a JASSO-designated academic score from the previous academic year (graduate, undergraduate, or Japanese language institute).
2. Demonstrate sufficient Japanese or English proficiency by submitting one of the following certificates:

 - Required Japanese Proficiency Certificate:
  a. JLPT N2 or higher
  b. EJU (Japanese as a Foreign Language) score of 200 or higher
  c. BJT Business Japanese Proficiency Test score of 400 or higher

 - Required English Proficiency Certificate:
  a. TOEFL iBT score of 72 or higher
  b. IELTS score of 5.5 or higher
  c. TOEIC L&R score of 785 or higher
  d. Proof of at least 3 years of education conducted in English at a high school
  e. Proof of obtaining an undergraduate or graduate degree taught in English

MEXT Scholarship with Embassy Recommendation

MEXT Scholarship applications with Embassy Recommendation are finalized about 13 months before enrollment at IUJ each September. The process starts 1.5 years before the start of the IUJ program.  
Please review the application process below:

1. About 18 Months Before Enrollment

Start of Application Process  Contact the Japanese embassy or consulate in your country to obtain application guidelines, forms, and schedules.
 *Deadlines and procedures vary by country.

2. May – August (19–13 Months Before Enrollment)

Preliminary Screening
at the Embassy
 Document screening, written exams, and interviews are conducted by the embassy or consulate.

3. Early September (1 Year Before Enrollment)

Embassy Recommendation
to MEXT
 Successful candidates are officially recommended to MEXT by the embassy.

4. After Passing Preliminary Screening

Obtain a Letter of Acceptance from IUJ

 Submit required documents to IUJ and obtain a Letter of Acceptance.
*Universities do not issue Letters of Acceptance after the end of August.

6. Final Stage

Note: IUJ will accept MEXT scholars only for the period needed to complete the degree for which the scholar plans to enroll. An additional 6 months of Japanese language training is not necessary for MEXT scholars who enroll to IUJ.
Final Selection by MEXT

 MEXT makes the final scholarship decisions.

Japan Study Support
  • Japanese Skills required: Levels of requirement vary. Some are basic, but most require strong communication skills. Most require the applicant to write their application documents in Japanese on their own., or present their IUJ research work verbally in Japanese.
  • Age Limitation: Some require applicants to be less than 30 or 35 years of age. See specifics for each scholarship.
  • Specific Country: Some scholarships provide only certain nationalities with support, and these often change year to year depending on the aim of the scholarship provider. Please see their specific info on the links provided. If know, IUJ has noted the info. If varying, we ask you to check the websites.

Part-time Work

Part-time Work on campus

Starting from the Spring Term of your first year, you may have the opportunity to work on campus. The hourly wage is 1,050 JPY. With permission from the Japan Immigration Service Agency of Japan, international students may work up to 28 hours per week. However, positions are limited, and most on-campus positions offer fewer hours.
Please note that some scholarships do not permit part-time employment requiring a work permit.

Part-time Work Off Campus

Opportunities to work off campus are very limited for students without Japanese language proficiency. A work permit is required. Please note that some students may not be eligible to obtain a work permit due to scholarship regulations.

Part-time Work by Spouses

A dependent visa is intended to allow a spouse to accompany and support a student during their studies (non-financial support). If a spouse wishes to work, a work permit is required. Spouses should not enter Japan primarily for the purpose of seeking part-time employment.
If permitted to work, spouses may work up to 28 hours per week. They are responsible for securing their own employment and must reside at the same address as the IUJ student.
Please note that a spouse’s employment must not interfere with the IUJ student’s academic responsibilities. All childcare needs (including during illness or school holidays), transportation arrangements, and other family responsibilities should be managed by the accompanying spouse.
