Exchange Program Opportunities

Expand Your World — One Term Abroad

At IUJ, we believe that stepping outside your comfort zone is key to becoming a truly global leader. As part of this vision, GSIR offers a dynamic Exchange Program that allows students to study abroad for one academic term at one of 10+ prestigious partner institutions across Asia, Europe, and North America.

This is more than just studying at another university — it’s an opportunity to immerse yourself in a different culture and experience new teaching methods. You’ll expand your network, sharpen your adaptability, and return with new insights that will set you apart in your future career.

When and How It Works

  • Timing: Exchange participation is typically during the Fall Term (September–December) of your second year.
  • Duration: One term (3 to 4 months)
  • Placement: Based on a competitive selection process

Eligibility and Costs

Students in the Two-Year Programs have priority in the exchange placement process. Students in One-Year Programs may apply to go on exchange after completing their degree in August, provided they continue their enrollment and pay the applicable tuition for the Fall term.

  • Tuition: Paid to IUJ during the exchange term
  • Other expenses (travel, accommodation, meals, etc.): Covered by the student
  • Tuition fees at the host school: Waived under exchange agreements

Build Global Connections — Even On Campus

Even if you do not go abroad, you can still benefit from IUJ’s strong global ties. Our campus welcomes exchange students from top schools around the world, offering unique opportunities for cross-cultural exchange and lifelong connections right here in Japan.

Note: Exchange opportunities vary each year, and not all partner schools accept students annually.

Voices from IUJ Exchange Students

From IUJ to Partner School

Nguyen Thi Ngoc Diep (Sylvia) (Vietnam)

Yonsei University, South Korea

My exchange at Yonsei University exceeded expectations. Through their inter-university credit system, I studied with friends from Ewha and Korea University alongside global peers who pushed me beyond my comfort zone. Late-night discussions and in-class presentations challenged my assumptions and sharpened my critical thinking. I grew by speaking up in environmental seminars, networking across Seoul and Jeju, earning recognition as Jeju's Honorary Young Diplomat.

IUJ's foundation gave me confidence to take risks; Yonsei's environment gave me space to try. I returned not just with new skills, but clarity about who I want to become and what I can contribute.

Soibam, Bharish (India)

Faculty of Social Science, Charles University

Arriving in Prague, I quickly understood why it’s called the City of a Hundred Spires. Studying at the Faculty of Social Sciences (FSV UK) felt like learning inside a living museum, where history is part of everyday life. The academic environment is dynamic and discussion-based, and I’ve grown through challenging courses like Russia after 1991, which pushed me to see how European perspectives on Russia are shaped by lived experience. Outside class, Prague’s more direct, open social culture contrasted strongly with my year in Japan, making me more aware of how norms quietly shape behaviour. This exchange broadened my worldview and strengthened my confidence in representing IUJ and JERA.

Julie Xiangying Zhai

EWHA Womans University

My time at IUJ has been intellectually enriching and personally transformative. Through courses in modern Japanese history, development policy, and Eurasian international relations, I gained unique academic insights not available at my home university. IUJ’s interactive, globally minded classes and diverse student community broadened my perspective on Northeast Asian relations. Living in a rural setting allowed me to observe Japan’s advanced infrastructure and reflect on sustainable, minimalist living. The warm support from professors and staff made this experience especially meaningful. IUJ has strengthened my passion for international relations, and I hope to return someday—as a scholar or educator.

Buda, Rebecca

Bocconi University

Finding exchange courses that align with my home university is usually difficult, but at IUJ it was possible and allowed me to complete a minor in Big Data and Business Analytics. The stimulating classroom environment, where professors actively encourage participation, helped me fully grasp concepts while enjoying the learning process. Beyond academics, I explored Taekwondo, participated in the Hult Prize, and felt genuinely integrated into the IUJ community thanks to its inclusive and welcoming atmosphere.
