About GSIR

Cultivate Yourself. Cultivate the World.

Established in 1982 as Japan’s first professional graduate school, the Graduate School of International Relations (GSIR) prepares students to become specialists in international affairs. The program provides rigorous training in politics, economics, and management, grounded in historical and cultural perspectives.

Drawing on the experiences of Japan and the Asia-Pacific region, GSIR approaches global issues within a coherent theoretical framework. Students develop a long-term vision, gain an appreciation for diverse global and local perspectives, and strengthen their analytical and problem-solving skills in a rapidly changing world.

Our faculty members, many of whom earned their Ph.D. degrees from leading universities in Japan, North America, Europe, and Australia, bring extensive academic and international experience to mentoring a highly diverse student body.

Students at GSIR represent more than 60 countries and regions. This diversity is one of the school’s greatest strengths, enriching classroom discussion and deepening understanding of international issues.
