Full-time English Faculty Position
[Job Description]
The International University of Japan in Niigata, a graduate institution catering to a multinational, multicultural student body, is seeking an individual to fill a full-time Assistant Professor position in the area of TEFL/TESL, beginning April 1, 2026. The contract is initially for two years, renewable subject to performance and budget, with the potential of the position leading to tenure.
Job Details:
[Requirements]
At least an M.A. in TEFL/TESL, Applied Linguistics, or an equivalent area; at least two years TEFL/TESL experience at the university level; teaching of academic writing and oral communication skills (i.e., presentation and discussion skills) at the tertiary level; some administrative experience at the university level; at least three academic publications.
[Desirable attributes]
Experience teaching academic English to graduate-level students; teaching and administrative experience in intensive English programs; teaching and administrative experience in English for professional/business communication; experience teaching a multicultural/multilinguistic group of students; experience with language test creation and calibration.
[Duties]
Teach up to 12 hours during the regular terms (including individual conferencing with students), and up to 16 hours during the summer program, per week; teach academic writing to graduate-level students studying international management, international relations, public policy, or economic development. Other responsibilities include curriculum development and course design, course coordination and program management, and committee duties.
[Salary and benefits]
From six (6) million yen (gross annual income, before any tax and medical insurance deductions); research funding; allowances.

Tenure-track Assistant/Associate Professor or Professor Position in International Relations
The International Relations Program (IRP) at the Graduate School of International Relations (GSIR) of the International University of Japan (IUJ) offers Master’s and PhD degrees in International Relations and a Master’s degree in Political Science. The IRP currently seeks applications for a tenure-track position (Assistant Professor/Associate Professor/Professor level) to begin January 2026 or later.
Established in 1982, IUJ is a private graduate school in Minami Uonuma City, Niigata Prefecture, Japan. It is Japan’s first graduate school to offer its entire curriculum in English. Our student body is highly diverse, representing a wide range of nationalities as well as professional and academic backgrounds, with many students having served as public officials before joining our school.

[Education and Degree Requirements]
Prospective candidates are expected to:
- have a doctorate degree in International Relations, Political Science or a relevant field by the time of the appointment
- be able to teach International Political Economy (IPE) courses at the graduate level
- have primary expertise in Japanese/East Asian politics, foreign policy or security
- English fluency is required and Japanese working-level proficiency is highly preferred

[Job Description]
The successful candidate will teach four eight-week courses in the Master’s program per academic year, distributed across the three terms (fall, winter, and spring), and eventually a PhD course in IPE. In addition, the candidate will supervise graduate research projects (Master’s thesis or research reports), also serve on the PhD supervisory committee once eligible throughout an academic year. One overseas business trip per academic year may be required.
[Compensation]
The salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience in addition to the benefits for housing or commuting. IUJ provides on-campus housing options for faculty and their families.
