Interactive & Practical Classes

The classes were highly interactive, combining traditional lectures with hands-on activities like group discussions, case studies, workshops, role-plays, team projects, and presentations. Field trips to a restaurant, winery, hotel, and stadium also bridged the gap between classroom theory and real-world hospitality businesses.

A Trule Global Environment

With a diverse student body from Canada, Norway, France, the US, China, Thailand, and beyond, the atmosphere was truly international. Canadian students formed the largest group, and sharing ideas with classmates from so many different cultures brought unique perspectives to our discussions on food, gastronomy, and business.

Safe & Convenient Campus

The campus was clean, well-maintained, and secure, with ID-card gate access ensuring safety. Student life was supported by great amenities, including a library, versatile study spaces, a convenience store, and a cafeteria. A personal favorite was the student-run bakery, which offered delicious, reasonably priced sandwiches and pastries.

Surroundings & Living Experience

I stayed in an Airbnb about a 15-minute walk from campus. The neighborhood felt safe, and a nearby supermarket was handy for daily groceries, though the lack of late-night convenience stores—unlike in Japan—took some getting used to. Lyon’s city center felt relatively safe and comfortably uncrowded for exploring. The only real challenge was the summer heat, as air conditioning wasn't available in some cafés, restaurants, and trains.

Overall Impression & Advice for Future Students

Overall, the two-week summer school was a incredibly valuable experience that provided a direct taste of French gastronomy and hospitality.

Message for Future Students:

Be sure to actively jump into class discussions and group activities—they are the absolute best ways to build friendships and broaden your perspective. Also, take full advantage of your free time to explore Lyon and nearby cities; there is so much to discover!
