2 credits/SPRING
Instructor: Buszynski, Leszek
Office: A-307
Tel: 541

The course will examine the development of Southeast Asian regionalism as an introduction to the study of Southeast Asian international relations. It will cover the development of Southeast Asian regionalism [ASEAN] over the past three decades providing a basis for the analysis of challenges as well as internal and external constraints. In this context the course will probe the significance of the Cambodian issue for the successful consolidation of ASEAN cohesion, it will also examine the initial efforts to promote regional economic integration. The course will then move to the post Cold War period of ASEAN's development identifying a broadening and widening of ASEAN's role and function in terms of both security and economics. The issue of the expansion of ASEAN's membership to include Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar as well as the organization's relationship with other Asia-Pacific security and economic structures will be treated in depth. Specific themes raised will include APEC, the ASEAN Free Trade Agreement [AFTA] and relations with the U.S. China and Japan. The course will conclude with an assessment of domestic political and economic trends in the major ASEAN countries, Indonesia above all, to identify the link between domestic order and regional stability.
